What does "responsible recycling" mean?
Our recycling partners ensure safe reuse or refurbishment of your used electronics in accordance with state laws to ensure that these products do not end up in landfills. That means that hazardous materials are removed from the recycled product and disposed of properly, and that any reusable components (metal, glass, plastic) are repurposed into new products.
What happens to the old microwave after it's been picked up?
Our partner MRM works with qualified electronics recyclers that adhere to the highest guidelines and standards. After your unit has been picked up it will be assessed to decide if it is eligible for repair, repurposing, or recycling. If the unit will be recycled, first any hazardous or ozone-depleting materials will be removed from your unit and disposed of in accordance with best practices of the industry and as well as state laws. After the hazardous components are removed, the reusable components such as plastic, metal, and glass are repurposed into new products. MRM provides record keeping, tracking and reporting the markets for recycled material and ultimate disposition of the key recycled materials.
To date, MRM has recycled more than 1,542,970,851 pounds of e-waste since it was founded in late 2007.
What is e-waste?
Electronic waste (e-waste) refers to discarded electrical and electronic equipment containing hazardous materials that require special handling and recycling methods. For instance, magnets and circuit boards often contain cadium, mercury, lead, and other toxic heavy meatals that can leach into the soil and contaminate ground water.
Examples of e-waste include household appliances, consumer electronics, electric office equipment, lighting—anything that was powered by electricity.
Be a Part of the Solution
Americans dump more than 2 million small appliances into landfills each year***—including microwave ovens. Panasonic has taken steps to help prevent e-waste and encourage consumers to recycle responsibly.
Panasonic products are built to last. But when the time comes to replace your microwave, our plan makes it easy. Your old microwave won’t need to go further than your doorstep, and we’ll bring your new microwave right to you!
