Federal law requires microwave ovens to be equipped with a door lock function. This is to prevent burns—to children or anyone unfamiliar with its use—when pulling hot plates out after cooking.
The door automatically locks when it is closed.*
If you are planning a custom, built-in microwave oven using a trim kit, make sure to deactivate the safety lock before installing the trim kit.
Here's how to open/unlock the microwave oven door, as well as how to deactivate the door lock.
How to open/unlock door
With the door closed:
- Press and hold side button while simultaneously,
- Push the door release button
How to deactivate safety lock
- Carefully pull forward the right corner of the microwave oven just past the countertop
- Press and hold side button while simultaneously,
- Insert a pen tip into hole until you hear a “click”
To re-activate the safety door lock, repeat the above steps.
IMPORTANT: Be sure to deactivate the safety lock before installing a trim kit.
