See There When You Can't Be There™

These cameras can be viewed and controlled from a standard Web browser, video display, or even a compatible cell phone or PDA1. Place them in your home, office, vacation home or almost anywhere else that you'd like to keep an eye on things, with no PC required on location! They are easy to install and operate and require no additional software for the PC that you're viewing them on. Each camera also comes with a free Web address, which can track the camera automatically. All you need is a regular Web browser to view them on your PC, as all of the other required software, including control software (TCP/UDP) and e-mail software (SMTP), is already inside the camera.

802.11b/g Wireless Communication & Ethernet Connection – No PC Required

This camera can communicate wirelessly with standard 802.11b/g wireless devices, allowing the flexibility to install and operate the camera without running network wires, and utilizing SSID filtering and powerful 64/128/152 bit WEP encryption helps to protect your wireless network from illegal intrusion. Since the camera is attached through an Ethernet connection (or router) and power source, you don't need a computer at each location you want monitored. Each camera has a built-in web server with IP address. To view the images on a PC, simply open a graphics-capable Web browser and type in the cameras specified, password optional Internet address.

Can Be Used Outdoors

This model was designed for outdoor operation, and meet both IPX4 and UL6500 standards of outdoor equipment. They operate down to -4F and up to 122F, and are splash resistant for wet-weather operation.

Two-Way Voice Communication

Use of the built-in microphone and a separately purchased amp-equipped speaker enables two-way voice communication2 (transceiver system) between the network camera and a PC used to monitor the camera image. In addition to conventional monitoring of images and sound, voice messages can be transmitted from the PC to the network camera. Voice transmission and reception can be switched easily from the PC used to monitor the image.

CCD Sensor for Enhanced Image Expression

This camera features a CCD (Charged Couple Device) for sharp, enhanced image expression. The image refreshing speed (maximum) has been increased to 30 images per second3 for smoother displays of moving images.

Record Directly onto SD Cards

The BB-HCM371A features an SD Memory Card slot for recording images captured by the network camera directly onto an SD Memory Card (sold separately).
* Voices cannot be recorded.

Simple Ethernet Connection – No PC Required

Our cameras are attached through an Ethernet connection (or router) and power source, you don't need a computer at each location you want monitored. Each camera has a built-in Web server with IP address. To view the camera's images on a PC, simply open a graphics-capable Web browser and type in the cameras specified Internet address(password optional).

Control the Camera Remotely

Using a standard Web browser, video display, or even a compatible cell phone or PDA, you can control the movement of the camera. There is 120° of Pan (left & right) movement and 65° of Tilt (up & down) movement available. You can also assign a "Home Position" that allows you to return the camera to a pre-designated shooting position. Up to eight shooting positions can be registered in advance, so you can aim the camera exactly where you want it. You can also click on the part of the image you want to see, and automatically bring that part to the center of the screen.

Record Only What You Want to Record

The camera can be set to automatically record video at certain times and certain speeds. In addition, with optional, external sensors attached to the camera, it is possible for the camera to email4 or record when triggered by motion, sound, light, timer, or even a push button. These convenient functions eliminate your need to constantly check the image.

Create Your Own Free Web Address

The FREE viewnetcam.com service allows you to create a personal Web address (e.g., http://bob.viewnetcam.com) at which your camera's live image can be found on the Internet. Access your Panasonic Network Camera live from virtually any Internet connection point around the world! Your Web browser is the only software you'll need. Here's how the camera and service works: special software embedded within your Panasonic Network Camera gives your camera the ability to locate your unique Internet address. No matter what kind of Internet connection you have or which Internet provider you use, the viewnetcam.com service will keep your camera's Internet address permanent.

  1. Connecting the camera to the Internet requires Internet access and may require that you obtain additional hardware such as a cable or DSL modem, or a hub or router with a 10Base-T Ethernet connection. The camera will not be accessible from across the Internet unless the Internet connection is active. We cannot guarantee that your Internet connection will always be available. The frame rate of the motion image may be dependent upon the uplink speed of the Internet connection and other factors. Viewing may involve some time delay. Recommended minimum 100kbps upstream bandwidth for camera.
  2. PLEASE NOTE that under certain circumstances, audio/video recording may be PROHIBITED by law. This device should be used only in compliance with all applicable federal, state and local statutes. This function can be used with a PC only. It cannot be used with a cell phone. To hear the voice transmitted from the PC, a commercially available speaker with a built-in amp must be installed. The transceiver system does not allow simultaneous transmission and reception of voices. A version upgrade may be required if you use under IPv6.
  3. Image resolution: 320 x 240 or 160 x 120.
  4. Email transmission may not be possible in some cases due to the mail server authentication system (SMTP authentication, etc.) used by your Internet service provider.

BB-HCM371A is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 11.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works quite well I have 4 of them and just ordered a BB-HCM371A for outside use. If you're familiar with setting up any wireless device (set SSID, IP mode DHCP or static, set the WEP encryption key, etc) you should no problem setting this up. The audio quality on the mic. is excellent, you can hear every word in the room, furnace noise, planes flying over, etc. It IS sort of like being there. The only downside is the frame rate is a bit lower than 30 FPS, and depends a lot on the connection speed. Works well for monitoring elderly parents that want to stay in their own home but need a little extra attention.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Camera Tech Savy users - setup challenging Great camera. Great Support. The support I received went beyond what I have had with other devices. It takes some time to figure it out but the manual covers "most" of it and certain routers can be a challenge. Read other reviews here and pick up some hints. The WEP is outdated but I created a second network with a spare router to overcome this. I own 2 of these now.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Returning tomorrow Would not work on wireless even after many hours of trying. I was then told it has problems with Windows 7. Finally using WEP security is way out of date. I have a few other Panasonic wireless cameras that do work but this must be an old design.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not "really" for outdoors I agree with the reviews that this is not for the technically challenged. I am a 20 yr IT pro and ended up having to use an Ethernet crossover cable to configure this. It did not like my Linksys E3000 router. Once I mounted it, I was disappointed to find that the power supply is for INDOOR USE ONLY. Ummm, isn't this an outdoor camera??!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Configuring this webcam with later Airport Extreme I wrote a review earlier noting I was disappointed that this wireless webcam only supports WEP encryption, which is abysmal. Additionally my Apple Airport Extreme wireless router does not support WEP encryption (probably because WEP is pretty useless against anyone with tech savvy these days -- they just have to google for the a script that can break the encryption within a few minutes). I have disabled security because I'm not terribly worried about people hacking into my wireless network, and I set up mac filtering (which is also pseudo-security at best). As an FYI to anyone else trying to work around this and using the mac filtering as a workaround: There are three mac addresses associated with this webcam, and all of them have to be added to your mac filter in order to for you to be able to access the webcam images: 1. The MAC printed on the back of the webcam - the MAC associated with the ethernet card 2. The MAC associated with the wireless card, which the instruction manual tells us is one value higher than the ethernet MAC. 3. The MAC belonging to the camera itself. This can be found in the camera admin pages, under maintenance. Scroll down and look for "BSSID" ... notice how it looks like a MAC address. Add this address to your mac filter's "allowed" devices.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great camera I have purchased a total of 3 of these cameras now, the oldest one is well over a year old. They work fabulous and the picture quality is great. I had originally used them as wireless, however, these cameras will only support WEP and I'm running WPA/WPA2 so that is a drawback. However, I use them to look after my second home and have them set up to detect motion and upload pictures to a FTP site. That works great. The documentation is not the best, but playing around with the setup and camera itself have taught me quite a few things. Overall, excellent product. I would consider myself an expert in computer hardware, software, and network configuration.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product but not for the rookie install-wise From a product performance point of view, this camera is outstanding and very full featured. The framerate to image quality selection provides a good blend of control between image quality and framerate/motion of movement. Brightness controls allow for adequate light control in high and low light conditions. The pan angle span of 120 degrees (60 degress left and right of dead center) is only a bit limited, but acceptable given it's a totally enclosed dome protecting the camera. The tilt angle of 45 degrees down/20 up from dead center) is more than adequate for viewing the ground and sky for home needs unless you have th need to look straight up for some reason. The 35' power cord was more than enough for us to run power from the camera mounted under a covered porch through the side of the house and plug into a wall socket. The audio quality is good (we can hear bird chirping with ease). The camera controls are very intuitive and easy to use. An especially nice feature is what I'd call the positional reference point of the pan and tilt buttons. When you click them, they pan or tilt the full 120/65 degree pan/tilt span from the position of the lens and return to the position the lens was in when you click. So if you are say, 30 degrees to the left of center and click pan, the lens pans 30 more degress to the left, 120 degress to the right, then back 90 degress back to the original 30 degree left of center start position. It also holds whatever zoom setting you are in during all pans and tilts, either using auto pan/tilt or manual arrows. The 10X zoom is just OK as the image degrades in resolution quality rather quickly as the zoom factor increases. The Zoom does, however, have a mouse (slow) as well as right click (fast) zoom speeds. Now the bad news. Installation is not for the rookie. You'd best be pretty PC/network savvy with good troubleshooting and problem solving skills before you take on installation. My wife and I work in IT and are pretty tech savvy and it took us two weekends to finally figure out that the instructions were missing some steps in set up that kept the remote (browser) control feature from connecting. Yes, setting it up to control onsite isn't hard, but the main reason we bought this camera was to watch over our mountian house via an PC from anywhere. THAT part took some doing to finally figure out. Once installed and fully operational, this camera ROCKS. The color is excellent. it also operates at -5 degrees below freezing; a must for up here in the NC mountains in winter. Highly recommend this product. We'll be getting another one.
