When installers have hundreds of holes to drill in concrete or other materials, it’s time to turn to the Panasonic EY7880Z2S (EY7880X tool only) SDS-plus rotary hammer kit. The tool is built to handle serious drilling jobs. Panasonic serial drilling tests show the tool can drill 180 ½” x 1-9/16” holes continuously, only stopping to change battery packs twice in the test. Its maximum continuous drilling capacity is 9/16”-diameter x 3-1/2”-deep holes. The ¾” SDS-plus tool can handle this tough, continuous use because it is built to handle the heat and dust that knocks out most rotary hammers working under such severe conditions. The magnesium metal gear case has a computer-designed air flow system that acts as a radiator to cool the hammer and drive mechanism, yet is sealed to keep dust out of critical components. A large fan pulls air through the tool at a high velocity, cooling the tool while preventing tool-killing dust buildup inside the system. The dust-proof, slow-start two-finger switch protects electrical components from dust contamination, yet is easy to hold, even in difficult work. The tool’s ergonomic design makes it comfortable to use in repetitive drilling jobs. At only 12-9/16” long x 8” tall x 3-3/16” wide and 8.49 lbs. including the 28.8-volt 3.1Ah battery, the tool is light enough and has a comfortable balance and handle position, even for overhead work. The soft rubber grip improves comfort and the auxiliary side handle that has a built-in depth gauge can be positioned 360 degrees for optimal tool comfort and control. It comes standard with the EY9X004E dust control cup that catches concrete dust in overhead drilling jobs. A bright LED task light illuminates the drill bit for faster, easier hole location and accurate drilling. The two-speed transmission offers 0-920 rpm drilling/0-4,500 bpm hammering at 23.6 kN (2,400 kgf) of force in high/hard mode and 0-500 rpm drilling/0-2,000 bpm with 12.7 kN (1,300 kgf) of force in low/soft mode. The tool comes with two high-capacity 3.1Ah Li-ion battery packs that reach usable charge in 65 minutes and full charge in 80 minutes when charged with the kit’s EY0L81B charger. For greater versatility, an optional EY9HX402E SDS-plus chiseling attachment for light chiseling and the EY9HX400E SDS-plus drill chuck for 1/16”- to 1/2” diameter bits are available.
Tough tools for tough conditions
The EY7880LZ2S/EY7880X SDS-plus rotary hammer has an IP56 rating that proves the tool’s toughness claims. This rating means the tool has withstood demanding laboratory tests of working in extremely dusty work environments and the effects of water getting sprayed on the tool by powerful jets. In the field, it assures professional tradesmen have a tool that can stand up to the rigors of hard jobsite use. The IP rating is established by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and is outlined in IEC 60529. The standard outlines a coding system that indicates the degree of protection an electrical machine’s enclosure offers internal components. Based on objective testing, it assigns a rating to the enclosure’s ability to keep potentially damaging solid foreign objects (dust and contaminants) and water out of the tool under increasingly difficult conditions. The dust protection test subjects the tool to a very dusty environment and then puts it to work to assure the tool was unaffected by dust exposure. In the grueling test, the tool proved that it achieved a dust protection level of five out of six levels; the sixth level is for dust-tight tools. It’s a good indication that the tool’s design keeps potentially harmful contaminants out, assuring long life and top performance that professionals demand. Similarly, the water protection test put the tool up against increasing levels of water exposure. It attained a six out of eight levels rating, withstanding the effects of powerful water jets.
