Microwaving has Evolved

When it comes to everything you expect in a microwave, nothing compares with the defrosting, cooking and reheating capability of the new Cyclonic Wave. At every temperature level, Cyclonic Wave circulates heat in precision, ultra-efficient 3D waves for easier, more versatile food preparation, even with denser, more complex food textures.

This exceptional microwave also includes patented Inverter Technology.™ Unlike traditional microwaves that rely on pulse-on, pulse-off power at lower temperatures Inverter Technology delivers a constant stream of cooking power at every temperature. The result? More evenly cooked meals — edges to centers — every time.

Put together, Cyclonic Wave with Inverter Technology provides the fastest, most efficient way to enjoy perfectly prepared snacks, sides and meals across a wider range of cooking techniques, while also maintaining more of the natural nutrients and flavor you want. It's the ultimate combination in advanced microwave cooking today. And only Panasonic has it.

Taste the Wave

Cook, reheat, defrost evenly and completely with Cyclonic Wave. Cyclonic Wave circulates heat in ultra-efficient 3D waves for precise defrosting and reheating. For cooking, it delivers more versatile options for a greater variety of techniques. And more delicious results with perfectly cooked edges and fully heated centers at all temperature levels.

Discover Low

Patented Inverter Technology delivers a seamless stream of cooking power even at low settings, so not only will your food be easily and quickly prepared, you can confidently cook, and even poach, braise and steam foods to perfection. Just as important, the essential vitamins and nutrients you expect in your meals will be retained. Together, Cyclonic Wave with Inverter Technology makes cooking quicker, more efficient and flavorful. Everything you expect from the leader in advanced microwave technology.

Great Cooking, No Guesswork

With Genius Sensor Cook/Reheat, Panasonic takes the guesswork out of creating great meals by automatically setting power levels and adjusting cooking or defrosting time. The Genius sensor does the thinking for you, measuring the amount of steam produced during cooking and signaling the oven's microprocessor to precisely calculate the remaining cooking time at any power level.

Sensor Inverter Turbo Defrost™

The Genius microwave with Turbo Defrost helps prepare food more efficiently than any Panasonic microwave before it. This advanced feature utilizes a microwave sequencing system based on Inverter's continuous-power delivery method to thaw foods more quickly and evenly, while also protecting and preserving flavor, texture and nutrients. With Turbo Defrost, there are no frozen centers or overcooked edges. And no other microwave brand can match it.

Elegant Controls

With its elegant designer styling and electrostatic glass touch controls and door, this 1250W high-power microwave represents the ultimate in microwave cooking today. These intelligent, intuitive controls include a cool blue LED display and provide 20 preset menu options for everyday meals and snacks, plus the manual controls you need for more adventurous menus. Controls and sensors automatically set power levels, monitor and adjust cooking time and when done, keep foods warm until ready to serve.

Added Conveniences

More everyday advantages include a large 16.5-in. diameter glass turntable and a timer that lets you set cooking and reheating times in 30-second intervals. A handy delay start feature, bright, time-of-day clock and versatile timer provide even more conveniences. A child safety lock is also provided to keep young hands from operating the oven.

Interactive Menu Screen

A helpful Menu Action Screen scrolls step-by-step cooking instructions for a full range of appetizers, main courses, side dishes, soups, sauces, casseroles, desserts and more across the display in your choice of English, Spanish or French. It's almost like having a professional chef to assist you in the kitchen.

Maximum Interior, Minimal Footprint

The smarter, more compact transformer and capacitor that comprise the Inverter power unit occupy less interior space than other brands to provide a larger space for cooking. These smaller, more efficient units are also up to 8 pounds lighter than conventional microwave components. All of which adds up to less weight overall and a minimal exterior footprint when placed on a counter.

Built-In Trim Kits

If you prefer your microwave built in to a new or existing wall or cabinet, Panasonic offers optional stainless-steel trim kits created specifically for the built-in model and size you choose. Precision manufactured to enhance the look and fit of your microwave, and the décor of your kitchen, this stylish trim kit will keep its quality and beauty for years to come.

NN-SE985S is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 15.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from oven worked great, damage to housing though had to return product because the stainless steel housing was dented and they wouldn't offer a discount for me to keep it. so now I assume I might have to pay a restocking fee to return it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Recommendations I recommend to the designers : 1, Make the rotisserie rotate 360* for each 10 seconds 2. Leave the light on when the door is open 3. Make the key pad glow in the dark and easier to see.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not good - choose any other Panasonic - not this I must have included too much attitude in my previous review because Panasonic wouldn't approve it. Here's the review with no attitude: I wouldn't recommend this microwave at all because of how difficult it is to use and how counter-intuitive it is. They tried to make it more intuitive, but it's the opposite. My biggest complaint with the microwave is that it doesn't have a numerical keypad (look very closely at the pictures and you'll see that all of the buttons are for popcorn, coffee, etc...) and none of the other features on it are really easy to use, so all in all it was just always hard to actually cook food. We had this for 2 weeks before having to return it to Panasonic (which is a 15% restocking fee and cost us $70 for shipping). At the time we returned it, our kids still barely knew how to use it, and we had to give a tutorial to any company we had over. It's not just one that you can figure out easily. It's VERY different from any other microwave you've ever seen. The reviews about the microwave shutting down your wifi connection when it's cooking are true. If you like appliances with a ton of complex features that are potentially helpful for specific foods, but that you'll need to spend a long time learning, this is the one for you. That was not what I was looking for at all though. I just wanted a good microwave, and didn't look close enough to realize that this was built in an entirely different way than any other microwave that I had ever seen.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great features, worth the extra cost We use the microwave for 3 main reasons. 1) defrost foods (especially meats) 2) reheat foods, pizza and plate setups 3) morning oatmeal The defrost cycle works much better than the inverter Panasonic this one replaced. Guess the cyclonic feature is not just fiction. No freeze ball in the center of the ground beef. Reheating is perfect, like last night's pot roast or a piece of pizza! Adjustable power really makes a difference with oatmeal because it heats slowly and you don't get a mushroom in the middle of the bowl that explodes onto the sides of the cabinet.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Electronic Controls Hard to Use Replaced old Panasonic that we had for many years. This one promised to be slightly better. However, it is not in my opinion. The problem is the electronic control panel. Instead on a 1 minute option there is a 30 second. So a cup of coffee requires four pushes instead of 2. Then the slide for setting times is difficult to get an exact time. The coffee button is bizarre with 1-1 through 2-2 options, none of which indicate time until selected. MUCH, MUCH prefer simple keypad to enter times. All the symbols on this panel (other than the 30 second) are non-intuitive. My belief is the designer got caught up in sophistication and forgot the user!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent functionally and easy to use Researched on Consumer Reports and web-sites a top replacement. Consumer Reports rated a number of microwave ovens as good selections in this medium-sized counter-top category. In reading the reviews of most all of them, users complained of consistent failures. This was the one oven which stood out with its new cyclonic inverter method of wrapping the food in a sinusoidal microwave pattern. Ingenious, and it works very well. A beautifully crafted machine that also looks good. No plastic shown outside, only stainless steel and glass. Even the keypad is touch sensitive behind glass. The keyboard is unique as it is icon based, not numeric based. Being stuck in the old numerical world it took me a few minutes to learn this simpler method. The interface is well thought out and elegant. Even for a logical engineer type as myself I found the intuitive use easy to grasp (and I haven't read the instructions yet). Spend more to obtain a quality machine that is very effective, looks great and is intuitively easy to use as this one.
