Reviews

Rated 4.8 out of 5 by 45 reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5 by BEST hybrid; features compete with any DSLR After a year of daily use, I can honestly say the GH4 is performs exceptionally well across the entire range of features packed into a lightweight, weather-sealed body. The sensor and processors capture native 4K video, time-lapse photography and portraits particularly well. We are impressed with the ability to record powerful moments nature, news, travel, and family events right away, increasing with impact as we learn the camera. The overall size/convenience to power ratio is tipped way into the owner's favor. At one point I found myself in an intense urban setting overseas, and was very thankful to gather UHD video clips and quickly stash the camera and low-profile 20mm lens into my cargo pocket. Time lapse photography of the night skies have been breathtaking, and the setup was quite easy. The interface is quite usable from day one and progresses from there. I have adjusted the settings and function buttons to allow quick access to the features I need most. And I am excited about features like the Cinema settings for video. From there I can choose preset options to maximize the impact of footage going straight to finish or for editing later, or customizable for anything in between. Additionally, the sheer vastness of recording options, native and adaptable lenses means I can record events at essentially any resolution and detail fit for my editing software, medium of choice or client's budget. It's not without mention that the camera does have one caveat and that's the all-too-mentioned low-light performance. Indeed, in dimly-lit situations the camera will be outperformed by other cropped or full-frame sensors, and future GH iterations will continue to bridge the gap. However there are a dozen ways to compensate, and frankly I wasn't comfortable with sacrificing the GH4's existing features for other mirrorless or full-size systems that cannot compete with the GH4's size, value or feature set. Besides, for me as a professional videographer, no image or video goes to the client or website without at least some finishing. Therefore, I edit and fine-tune before posting or publication, and some compensation and de-noising for low-light performance just becomes part of your standard post-production work flow. Not only that, but my basic photo/ video journalism kit is capable of C4K footage, NFC for distribution, weighs less than 25lbs and fits in a 25L carry-on backpack. That means no fly and cry at baggage check. To that end the camera has traveled extensively and I noticed a little peeling in the weather seal just left of the battery grip. It was repaired along with some other small adjustments under warranty and returned in 9 days. In summary, I am delighted. The only real urgency for me is getting a 4K companion B-camera as soon as possible. February 19, 2016
Rated 4 out of 5 by Great Little Camera Having traveled around the PNW the last few years climbing mountains and filming athletes with the GH4, I highly recommend this for anyone getting into outdoor photography and video work. When weight is an issue, this camera fits the bill with being compact, weather resistant and packing a powerful punch. The camera does suffer with some grain when at higher ISOs but filming outdoors, it's usually very unnoticeable. Looking forward to the GH5! February 19, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great For Video The GH4 is the first DSLR I've purchased specifically for video. I looked at a lot of options and found that the GH4 could deliver about 85% of what I needed in a camera (no camera can deliver 100% unless you pay a lot of money). Since I've been using it, I have been very happy with it and highly recommend it. February 18, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by No More video envy - I traded in a full size HD vide camera for the GH4 and I am happy I did. Using the camera is easy once it is set up. I took a few hours getting used to the settings and making presets, looks and user buttons. The settings make shooting easier when I am in a hurry. I have used the wifi connect to my iPhone and iPad with pretty good results. I need more practice because I am not able to wifi connect quickly and consistently. It takes a few tries. Other than that I am happy with the GH4 performance. I trust panasonic to make a high quality professional grade product. This camera is proof of that. I used to spend many hours looking at gear - now that I own the GH$ I don't have the video gear envy I used to have. I can shoot HD UHD or 4K at will. All for a reasonable price. February 18, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by Incredible workhorse I've used this for corporate work and every client has been amazed by the quality. February 18, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great 4K Professional Camera If you do professional videos this your camera, 4K are superb, compact and inexpensive camera. February 17, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by Amazing Hybrid Camera I've owned the GH4 since its release and wow, what a camera. I've owned the GH1 and GH2 as well, which were both very good, but the GH4 takes the cake. I like the option to have a very videocentric HUD, as I use it about 70/30 video to photo. The 4K is top notch, period, let alone at this price range. Focus peaking was a big feature for me as I use a lot of both Lumix and vintage manual lenses. The customizability of the picture profile is great. Video recording and stills are both rock solid. Build quality is great all around and battery life is spectacular in my opinion. EVF and OLED screen are great with great, usable touch screen features. Wifi remote control works great on my iPad Air and is very useful for projects where I'm in the shot. The audio input and preamp isn't amazing, but it's very good. I get totally usable audio from the mic jack. About the only thing I'm left wanting is faster auto focus in video mode, especially 4K. I know that there is a limited amount of processor power, so I can't fault the camera too much, but autofocus keeps up very well at 1080p 60, but any time using 24, especially in UHD or C4K and autofocus is practically unusable. It's a small little quip on a great camera. February 17, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by Best purchase I've made since shooting video This camera is incredible. It shoots beautiful video and pictures. I've had the GH4 since August of '15 and haven't looked back. Great value for the price. The GH4 has helped me greatly improve my video work and is a solid investment for anyone who either shoots video on a regular basis and cares about quality. Side note: The battery life is phenomenal - while this may not be a concern to some it is to me and I greatly appreciate it. Panasonic for life. February 17, 2016
