Reasonably good protection because heavy leather protects the lens and the rear screen very well, certainly more so than carrying the camera in a pocket. When open, I find the cover somewhat awkward, but manageable after regular use. Being able to charge the battery when the case is closed is convenient, and the case when open does not obstruct any of the operational controls of the ZS50.
